Area Guide

An historic part of Bolton, Smithills is just 3 miles from the town centre and on the edge of our beautiful countryside, but still with its very own character.

With its name derived from the old English for smooth hill, recorded as Smythell in 1322 it was a manor in the township of Halliwell, with Smithills Hall, owned then by the Radcliffe family, as the manor house. The area was known as Halliwell until 1894 when it finally changed its name to Smithills and became one of Boltons civil parishes. Perched on the edges of moorland and parkland, yet minutes from local amenities and schools, Smithills offers some super properties for first time buyers and established families alike.
