Emerging as a hunting chase for the wealthy Manchester Barons in the middle ages, transformed as water power was harnessed for the cotton industry, and as a major engineering employer after the construction of the locomotive works in 1884, Horwich later became the location for De Havilland, Hawker Siddeley then British Aerospace, all important in supporting our military manufacturing industry. As these industries declined, a major regeneration project has resulted in the arrival of a number of new employers and a major retail and commercial park, located around the site of the iconic Macron Stadium. Despite these changes, Horwich has managed to keep its town centre alive with local businesses, pubs and restaurants and a weekly outdoor market which all add to the charm of the town.

Schools, Shopping and Transport

Well served for primary schools, with Claypool, Chorley New Road, St Catherines, St Mary’s, Lord Street and Horwich Parish in the town itself, secondary education is provided by Rivington & Blackrod and St Joseph’s high schools with school bus services to Bolton School. For shopping, residents of the town are spoilt for choice, with the shops and market of Horwich town centre competing with the Middlebrook Retail Park and its selection of supermarkets and big name brand outlets.

Finally, with arguably the most convenient road and rail connections in the area, travelling to work or indeed anywhere else couldn’t be simpler, as long as you can put up with the traffic at rush hour!

Leisure and Outdoors

On the edge of the town centre lies the popular Horwich leisure centre, with its pool, fitness centre and sports hall – with a new, £10 million state of the art facility under development on the site of the old multi story car park. Across at Middlebrook, the Bolton Arena offers another indoor sports facility for local residents, visitors and employees alike with Bolton Wanderers Macron Stadium onside for the clubs faithful supporters. Lying as it does on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, Horwich also offers easy access to walking, hiking and cycling trails up to Rivington Pike and beyond with a stop off for refreshments at one of the two Rivington Barns.

For hungry (and thirsty) visitors and locals alike, there are a number of local pubs and family run restaurants in the town if you are not in the mood to visit the many big names on Middlebrook which also features a state of the art cinema multiplex for fans of the big screen.
